I went ice skating last night again. I absolutely can't stand the rental skates, so I bought my own skates. I figure that they'll be worth it in the increased enjoyment I get out of skating, even the little skating I might do in the future. I do enjoy it, so I'll probably do it at least a few times a year, and that will definitely make for a good use of skates.

I find that, after I hit about 40 minutes of skating, I start to get really tired and have more trouble keeping my balance. My first time skating, I fell about 45minutes in, and I did the same thing this time. Fell really hard on my ass, and I'm finding it hard to sit today, as everything feels painful. I also have some really annoying whiplash. :( Hence the ow's in the title.

I tried to learn some stopping techniques this time, as well as practice some longer glides. I'm pretty good at your basic forward stroking. Push off with one skate and glide on the other, switch stance and kick off with the opposite skate, repeat until going very fast. And I can turn no problem. But staying on a single skate for very long really seems to unbalance me still. Going to keep practicing at it. Maybe try some crossovers during turning.

Doing the ice skating is also whetting my appetite to finally get that new pair of roller blades that I've been wanting. I think I'll buy a new pair in January. My current pair is complete shit from 15 years ago and barely works.

Fun stuff. I may even take some lessons at some point. Any of y'all out there enjoy this enough to join me?

Ice Skating

I went ice skating for the first time since I was in high school last night.

It was fun!

I think my PE class in grade school or high school did an ice skating lesson once or twice, but I don't really remember anything of what they taught. I think I also went skating once maybe during college. I'm really not sure. I know I haven't done it a lot, and I know that my past experiences on the ice have been quite poor.

I've been working on learning inline roller skating for a few years now. I got my current skates when I was in high school, and they're in pretty bad shape. I've pulled them out once in a while since then, and tried learning more. My most recent foray into skating had me able to skate to/from lunch while at work, and pull off turns and stops fairly well. I still tumble a lot, but I've managed to be able to move forward and stop.

When I got on the ice last night, I was really unsteady at first. I might chalk that up to really shitty skates, but who knows. My first 3 laps around the rink, I was really unsteady and moving quite slowly. By my 4th lap, with the help of a change in skates, I was flying around the rink at pretty high speeds. I still had no idea how to stop, and my ability to turn and such was not really as good as I would have liked in places, but I felt pretty sure on my skates. I guess my inline skating experience has helped!

I skated for about an hour. Towards the end, I was starting to get tired and finding it hard to stay upright. I finally had a little tumble onto the ice. OMG COLD and WET! EEK! I fell on my hip and was able to bounce right back up with very little pain. But the wetness and coldness, combined with my exhaustion and the fact that all of my comrades had already left the ice, meant that it was time to leave.

I'm going back next week, I think. This was too much fun not to do again. And you know me: The Neophile.

Any of y'all want to join me? Next week I plan to learn how to stop. :P I also plan on buying my own skates, cuz the rental skates are complete garbage.

Another thing I've noticed: It seems that there are more people teaching ice skating than there are teaching roller skating. I might be able to get some ice skating lessons and learn how to inline skate in the process. Could be an interesting thing to add to my repertoire. :)
