LJ Sucks

Wow. It seems like LJ sucks these days. Check this link out. It's all about Anton Nosik, The director of the blog division of SUP corporations, and his thoughts on his users.

Here's a summary from here:
"So if you disagree with LJ policies, if you are unhappy because of issues ranging from deletion of journals to the censoring of the popular interests lists to the proliferation of ads to the removal of basic accounts and you say so, if you're annoyed with LJ's habit of making significant changes and trying to slip them under the radar, you're a problem. Unless you can give "constructive criticism" by Anton Novik's definition, you're out to "bring harm to LJ, its founders" and to "criticize, destablilize and ruin our reputation". You're not a partner in a community, you're not a content provider: you're a consumer, and a good consumer shuts up and doesn't complain.

I've never been good at the whole shutting up and not complaining thing. I don't see any reason to start now."

Wow. Crazy stuff. Are any of you doing that boycott thing tomorrow?

"For one day, Friday, March 21, make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ. SUP obviously does not realize that Basic users have given something of value to them, that it is content that drives the site. So, for one 24-hour period, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?year=2008&month=3&day=21&hour=0&min=0&sec=0), let's see how many people we can get to pledge to contribute NO CONTENT. This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase. Full information at The Fox's Den (http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/394548.html)."

No. (1) I'm an anarchist. (2) I've seen too much Internet drama in the past 20+ years to want to participate in any of it any more. (3) Chill, people; just chill. (4) It's a full moon!

That interview has been a cause of leaning in the direction of boycotting, but most likely it will come down to whether I have anything (further) to say during the next day. Have not devoted enough thought to the matter to come to a serious conclusion.

I'm actually going to start running my own server soon. I'm sick of LJ and their plastering ads all over everything I write.

*raises hand* Yo.

First because it seemed aligned with my general principles, and now even more because of Anton Nossik.

A one day boycott strikes me as about as effective as not buying gasoline for one whole day, which I get hit with every couple of years or so.

The LJ staff has apologized. Anton Novik has apologized, and all the evidence points to the idea that the translation was more than a little biased in the first place.

And for god's sake--they made a change to their policies. I don't think they had anything to apologize for in the first place.

LJ hasn't changed, much. The only change is incredibly minor, it was well within their basic rights, and besides, Plus Account + AdBlocker = Basic Account.

I just really cannot see what the fuss is about. I was somewhat cheesed off at the Nosik interview too, before I found out more about it.

*shrugs* I don't care that much one way or the other, but I certainly do think they're making stupid business decisions.
