Lost speculation
Feb. 16th, 2010 11:03 pmSome thoughts on the plot of Lost. Skip for spoilers:
Various bits of speculation about what's going on within Lost:
Jacob and MIB have been fighting their battle since the beginning of time. The island is an arena within which they air their battles. There have been many iterations of this battle. At each iteration, a new "candidate" is chosen to replace Jacob and MIB, potentially freeing them. The remaining losties are the latest candidates. Also: This is nearing the end of the current iteration.
Jacob and MIB are angels/celestial beings of a sort. The island is a celestial arena within which they battle. The new kid is another angel.
MIB is clearly convinced that the humans are going to be violent and destroy everything. Jacob thinks otherwise and intends to prove MIB wrong about his belief.
Perhaps this is a battle between two bored omnipotent beings. Black and white here are like the black and white of chess. Neither having any different meaning, really. Just two opposing sides.
We've seen that the time travel stuff operates on consciousness, not on physical objects. That said, perhaps when the nuclear bomb went off, all of the conscious beings that were tied into the island were "warped" into a sort of "pocket universe" where only they and the island now exist. The actual island was destroyed in a massive explosion when the bomb went off (mixing energies with the pocket of energy beneath the swan station) and is now sunk at the bottom of the ocean.
I think we're going to have a pretty clear idea of what the island is by the end, but we're not going to be too clear on what exactly Jacob and MIB are. That's going to be left mysterious. We'll know *more* about them, but we won't know everything about who they are.
What does it mean that "It only ends once. Everything else is just progress"?
It strikes me that Jacob and MIB greet each other in the manner of that cartoon where the two characters greet each other amicably, punch in to "work," and then attack each other.
What a fascinating show. I'm loving this!
