Okay. So I've just received the last straw. This apartment complex has cockroaches. I've got at least two hanging out in my kitchen right now that I've seen, and I have no idea how many more hiding in their nest sharing my kitchen with me. I just cleaned the fuck out of everything, vacuumed, and bagged my stuffed animals. I'm also going to start making sure my dishes are cleaned before the end of the night every night.

Fuck this shit. I'm *NOT* sharing my house with roaches.

With everything else this complex does stupidly, I'm done with this place. Come end of my lease, I'm moving out.

*begin long string of expletives*

That sucks. When does your lease end?

February 1st.

I don't have the energy to move until then, anyways.

Report the roaches in writing and ask that an exterminator be sent immediately. They are legally obligated to send an exterminator. If they don't set something up quickly, you can hire one and deduct it from your rent.

Cockroaches are an unhealthy condition that make that hamper habitability. California has great tenant's rights laws. Here is a link:

Missk is correct, you CAN do that. Just make sure you keep copies of everything you send in writing to the landlord, signed, dated, and sent by registered mail if possible, and you also have to give them a fair chance to take corrective actions (reference the applicable habitability law and give them a week to comply, as well as a request to respond with an alternate date if they can't do it within a week).

I had the same problem in the first place I ever lived, and they said if you clean your place up we will come in and spray. So I did, and they did, end of roach issues, no problem.

I was just reading the page. It says 30 days is reasonable for most non-urgent items (like broken heater in winter or broken toilet).

I think she would have to wait that long to cover her ass on this one.

J- I suggest you read down the whole page and see all the different references and options.

"Keep copies of everything"

Gave me the sudden image of Joyce xeroxing roaches then sticking the originals in an envelope to send to the manager.

My apartment sprays the common areas and halls weekly. Still, I occassionally get a cockroach. I keep roach motels in the cabinets and closets where the cats can't get to them. My management also sprays the apartments any time there's an infestation. I would simply call and they'd add it to the schedule during regular spraying. However, that requires moving all my furniture out from the walls by like a foot and taking my cats with me to work for the day. I opt for roach motels. :)

Not to make light of your frustration, but...

...perhaps a little comedy to lighten your mood?

:)

I'm sure you'll work everything out fine.

Is that music a coincidence, or are you starting to do [livejournal.com profile] jwz type associations on purpose now?

The name of the song vs. the topic of the post.

Since other people have already given all kinds of fabulous advice and suggestions, I'll add something new rather than repeating them.

One thing you will want to keep in mind is that the chemicals they use for extermination are HARSH. I've never had a roach problem so I haven't looked into how to deal with it in a way that's least harmful to me AND the roaches, but regardless of how you feel about killing animals, you may find it difficult to live in an apartment where pesticides have been sprayed if you end up being sensitive to them. So, that's just one more factor to consider when you think about how you'll deal with the situation. Chemical toxins MAY be just as much of a problem as the roaches are. I know personally, even if I had zero ethical qualms about roach-killing, I would be more concerned about the pesticides making me sick than the roaches, as I know I get sick around weird chemicals.

You already know my opinion of the landlord there. The way they handle the parking lot and laundry room are pretty distressing, and that's just what you've had to deal with in the first few months living there.

I'm bummed that things aren't working out there, but you're definitely making the right call here.
