Zion Day 6 - Angel's Landing

Sunday was an "off" day for us doing proper canyons, so we decided to go in the opposite direction and attack Angel's Landing. Angel's Landing is one of the "normal" hikes at Zion National Park. It doesn't require any technical equipment, but it is a very strenuous hike up 1500 ft to the top of a mountain.
Angel's Landing is a fantastic place that looks over the entire river valley. You can see for miles up there, and it's an absolutely incredible view.
The route up is pretty strenuous, especially during the middle of the day like we were at. Although very challenging, it doesn't require any special equipment. Just lots of water.
Even as you begin to climb, the mountains just surround you
Due to the heat and the steepness of the hike, we stopped frequently for breaks.
After going up the beginning of the path in the sun, we made our way to "Refridgerator Canyon," so named because it got very little sun and was cool for most of the day.
Unfortunately, the canyon is pretty short, and you're quickly climbing the mountain again, over numerous switchbacks.
These short, steep switchbacks are called Walter's Wiggles.
At the top of Walter's Wiggles is Scout's Landing, where you can rest for a bit.
And from there, you have a half-mile hike to Angel's Landing, which is WAAAY over there, up over all those boulders!
The path you hike is, in places, VERY narrow, with 1500 ft. drop offs on either side:
But once you get to the top, the view is SO worth it!
Check out this video to see more of the top!
And check the album for more pictures from the hike
Once we got to the top, we just sat there and took it in for a little while. It's really hard to capture the experience of being up there in words or videos or pictures. It's something... out of this world. Almost like a religious experience or tripping on acid. You can't describe it properly to someone that hasn't experienced it.
Unfortunately, we had run out of water, and I was seriously overheating. With my friends nearby, I raced to the bottom of the mountain at top speed, trying to get out of the heat as quickly as possible. By the time I hit the bottom, I was seriously nauseous and dehydrated.
But, we made it out safely, and all was well in the world. :)
