Hello everyone! I'm writing this from Pioneer Lodge in Springdale, UT, just outside Zion National park. This is going to be our hotel for the next week, while we hike, rappel, and explore various routes in this park! I'm here with [livejournal.com profile] parmonster, [livejournal.com profile] auntysarah, [livejournal.com profile] zoeimogen, [livejournal.com profile] the_local_echo and [livejournal.com profile] cyberspice.

We stayed over in Las Vegas last night, so as to break up the driving a little bit. We arrived around 11AM today, and got our stuff situated at the hotel:
From Zion Day 1 - HIdden Canyon

I was absolutely blown away by the scale of the place!

We quickly got our stuff together, did a bit of shopping, and then were heading out to hike hidden canyon by 1300 or 1400.

The first part of the hike was really killer. It was a 600 foot ascent in a pretty short distance. [livejournal.com profile] auntysarah got to the top first and was goading the rest of us on. :)

We had to do an approach hike first, which required us to walk past a few sheer cliffs, but nothing too bad. We also had a slight medical issue, which resulted in [livejournal.com profile] cyberspice having to stop before actually entering hidden canyon and wait for us to return. Once we were in hidden canyon, it was this really neat little thing wedged between two tall mountains

We hiked a ways down the tiny canyon until we found a nice place to do some practice rappels at. We set up and each did several rappels down this short boulder.

We were definitely pooped when it was all done.

We got back, jumped in the hot tub, got some pizza and beer, did some laundry, and went to bed.

Tomorrow is another set of hikes. See you then.

Making me really miss long camp outs in the woods. Looks like so much fun. :)

That looks like so much fun! Are you practicing two-rope rappels, too? That'll help prepare you for multi-pitch. Single rope rappels are used when you can return to the rappel anchors to retrieve your rope.

We're only using a single rope, but we're doing double strand rappels off it.
