I think refined sugar is a Bad Thing, too. My problem is, artificial sweeteners taste like they were motor oil to me. I've tried Equal, Sweet'n'Low, Splenda...I can taste them all.
I also found it that only one in a million (something like that) taste that metallic taste when eating artificial sweeteners. So while I hate eating refined sugar, I can't really use the alterntatives. I only use splenda in sugared stuff I have all the time (like tea).
When I did that I started to get horrible headaches and felt really bad the second and third day. I didn't make it past that because it was so bad. I was not a big user of refined sugar either.
Sugar subs cause cancer don't use it. Look up the studies if you don't believe me. Some countries in Europe have banned the stuff.
Take care of yourself and don't push your body if it starts to let you know it does not like detoxing.
The absolute best of luck to you - I expect this will be much harder than you think. (Though admittedly I say this knowing little to nothing about your diet.)
I did that for about two weeks. Oh my god, ice cream tasted so good at the end of that. Unfortuantely, I have a fairly severe and bizarre allergic reaction to most all artificial sweeteners, and am definitely mildly addicted to sugars and sweets, so this is not an easy conduct for me to obtain :)
That and I tend to use sugar and caffeine as a very useful mood-stabilizer when I'm dealing with stress. On the bright side, it takes a lot to stress me out to the point that it's actually noticable. On the down side, my diet sucks right now thanks to the whole "moving to a new job and still not quite financially stable" :)
If you want to take it serious and see how you do (A week isn't much time... It's long enough to get the headache and grumpiness and not the good stuff) there are a number of books on it.
More generally, you want to limit simple carbohydrates, and high glycemic index foods. Mashed potatos, for example, are right out. (Potatos with the skin are still good, the skin has lots of fiber which slows down the absorbtion of carbohydrates.)
Off the top of my head, there's the Sugar Addicts Complete Recovery Program, or Potatos not Prozac. (Both by the same author, with the former being a follow up to the latter.)
When I was little my parents always used to get sugarless jam, I think because my grandfather was diabetic. Now the only sugarless jams I can find are either hella expensive or full of nutrasweet. :( Also, I love all your kitty icons.

Sometimes to treat myself I use refined sugar. :)
