Most reliable sources I've found describe the symbol as symbolizing either Mercury himself (in his winged hat), his caduceus staff, or some combination thereof. For me, it's too big a change from the symbol of one of the deities that symbolized male sexuality, to a symbol for transgender people. Mind, this is just my opinion.
