Been playing with the new 1.2.0 release of Minecraft that dropped this weekend. Here's a fictionalized account of my first experiments with the new portal technology in the game.
Day 466: I've been hearing screams in the night, and I think that they may be due to the existence of another dimension. I've been experimenting with applying energy to obsidian as a way to pierce the walls between these worlds and enter into one.
Day 467: I've done it! I've done it! I am convinced that there is a way to the other realm!
Day 500: The leaders of sky castle have decided that they will house the bunker within which the first portal shall be built. They are taking no chances. The portal room will be isolated from all of the main living areas and sealed behind an iron door.
Day 550: The portal room is finished...

Time to begin the portal experiments.

Subject one was fitted with a video camera and microphone, so that we could review his progress from back in the portal room. Cautiously, he stepped into the portal. From the cam, we could see his world start to swirl and dance, then suddenly, he wasn't there anymore!

A staticky voice came through on the speaker.
"I've ar****ved on the other side of the g***. I'm still sta**ing in the gate itself. The gate's energy fluc****ions are making it difficult to see. I can make out s******** of lava off in the dist***"

"I am **** take a step for-... AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH********---------"
From what video feed we could see, the specialist stepped out into nothingness and plummeted a thousand feet into a lake of lava. The video feed went dead.

Considering all of the equipment the subject had taken with him, this was a heavy loss.
Day 553: We've prepared another agent for travel through the gate. This time, she will step through the gate and look around *very* carefully before stepping anywhere. Once again, she stepped into the swirling vortex and vanished from sight. The video feed and voice came online just as before.
"I am seeing what Johnson was likely see********* lava and glowing rocks. There is indeed a *******rop off before *** I am cautiously turning ***. I see g****** There is ground in t*** r direction!!!!"
A cheer went up in the control room. Jana had found ground! We were going to be able to get to the other side of the universe after all!
"I am now ***** step onto the earth."
A squishy noise filled the control room.

"The ground is stra***e, almost like a soft *** peat... The area I've port*** into is extre**** dark. I *** barely see anything **** far off in the distance. I-"
An unearthly scream filled the control room, and moments later, the video feed went dead. Looking up, we saw the portal flicker and die, as if something had shut it off on the other side.
Day 560: We were able to get the portal up and running again by once again running energy to it. As soon as the portal opened, the video feed came back on. A cheer went up in the control room. Was Jana alright? But as the image resolved itself on the screen, we realized that our cheer was premature. The camera looked to have been dropped on the ground and was facing the portal. We activated the remote playback function to see what happened after we lost contact.
Jana's voice filled the control room, "I've got incoming projectiles from an unknown source! I'm trying to get a bead on it!"
The camera swung about wildly as Jana struggled to dodge the incoming fire.
"This ground... it's... it's hard to move on. It's like it's moving or something. I can't get to safety! I- AAAAAH!!!!!"
Jana's scream filled the room as the camera turned to face the now inactive portal. Deactivated, the energy fluctuations at its core were no longer active, and we could see right through it. Coming straight towards Jana, through the portal frame, was a fireball. Behind it, looming far off, was a giant, blobby flying octopus thingy. The fireball connected and an explosion filled the room. The camera flew off to one side of the gate. A second later, Jana appeared in the few, leaping towards the gate. She stood in it for a few moments, then slipped and fell into the lake of lava as another fireball came flying towards her.
The blob slowly floated off screen.

Day 580: We've decided that the only way we're going to be able to get anything through the gate will be to send in a number of soldiers to hold the area while our engineers construct a simple structure to protect gate travelers coming through. But before we're willing to invest ourselves in such an endeavor, we're going to have to make sure we can come back. Today's volunteer is going to do just that.
"Alright... I'm through!" Anya stepped quickly onto the mushy ground.
We called out to her, "Okay! Quickly get back inside!"
She visibly nodded and went to turn, then stopped... "Oh god..." she groaned.
"What's wrong!?" we called out.
Another ghast scream filled the room. Anya shook her head, "Nothing! I'm coming back now!"
She leapt into the portal and held tight as its energies swirled around her. Everyone in the control room looked anxiously at the portal to see if she had arrived. Nothing happened. The portal sat there, ominously.
A voice came through on the speaker, "What the hell?"
We all looked down at the monitor. The video feed was showing Anya standing in a natural valley. It looked like earth, but... why hadn't she reappeared here?
She spoke quickly, "I'm in an unknown location. I'm going to use my compass to try to navigate back."
She pulled out her compass and quickly began to navigate. She crested a ridge and quickly we identified her location.
"That's one valley over! See? That's the sky castle right there!"
Day 600: We figured out what happened. Every location in our world corresponds to a location in the netherworld and vice versa. However, not all locations support the opening of a portal. When we portaled into the Nether from our world, the gate *jumped* several meters to the nearest flat platform, landing us right on the edge of a cliff. But when we portal back, the new portal can't find the originating portal. Thus, it opens a brand new portal in the nearest location that corresponds to its new location.
Deconstruction has already begun on the old gate room, and construction of a new gate room has commenced.
Day 630: Yesterday's gate excursion was a success. We managed to get some troops positioned on the other side of the gate and hold back the "ghasts" long enough to get some intel on the area we had travelled into.
The soft ground turned out to be a big problem. Surrounding our portal was tons of "slowstone," which seems to make it nearly impossible to move in. Several troops were lost before we figured out what was going on. Once the troops got off the slowstone and onto the "hellstone," they were able to move at a normal pace.
They were able to establish a permiter, taking down incoming ghasts, long enough for our engineers to portal in and build a gate room on the other side. Once this was complete, we were able to rest easy. Isolated from the ghasts, we were able to start working on the gate system in earnest.
Day 650: After we discovered that distances in the nether are 16x compressed from our world, it was decided to build portals linking all three of the major domiciles in the area. The cabin, sky castle, and main castle. This work will be difficult, as we're never quite sure where we're going to pop out of the nether into the real world. But it will be worth it.
Day 700: It is now time to use the nether to travel to an entirely new place in our world. Thus we will be able to build a long tunnel into the rock a far way away and build a portal there to portal into a brand new world. The work has begun, and we expect to arrive soon!
