I so know what you mean. That's largely why I use LJ, too.
Do you make occasional off-LJ backups of your journal? You might want to do that. I haven't done that yet either, but I do copy all my "public online activity" into a lifestream that I own. And I've gone back to it frequently to refer to a half-remembered event I wanted to share again.
