As you may know, my doctor told me that I'm probably not allergic to corn, but am probably suffering from fructose intolerance instead. Doing some research on the subject suggests that it may instead be fructose malabsorption, as that more closely matches my symptoms.
Fructose malabsorption results when the body has trouble properly digesting the sugar fructose. Studies have shown that one in every three Americans suffers from this condition, but that it is frequently misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome.
Symptoms are displayed when the sufferer eats foods that are higher in fructose than in glucose. This apparently is harder for the body to digest, and results in the reaction taking place. In my case, the symptoms present themselves as breathing pain, flatulence, nausea, stomach pain, brain fog, eye aches, etc. Some studies show connections between this condition and various mental/emotional issues such as depression.
What sort of things make me ill? Well... there's quite a variety. Now, the weird part is that I *can* actually eat all of these things and frequently do. I just have to make sure to keep the consumption fairly low and I'll be fine.
Apparently, wheat also contributes to this. I may have to take up the gluten-free diet that so many of my friends are doing and see if that makes me feel even better.
Since massively reducing my consumption of fructose, I have lost an incredible amount of weight and gained an incredible freedom of body that I hadn't previously had. All my life, I've encountered extremely painful labored breathing every time I would exercise. Now, I can breathe full lungfulls of air without even a bit of pain. It's wonderful!
