The Death/Rebirth cycle

Whenever I meet an absolutely awesome person, I can practically assume that they are going to have one of those stories. You know the kind. At some point in their life, a significant portion of their self-identity was ripped away in a traumatic moment. I know some people that literally had to crawl on their hands and knees to safety to survive. People that have lived on the streets or off the kindness of strangers. People that have had nowhere to live, nowhere to be, etc. Sometimes, it's as simple as having lost everything of value, perhaps in a social sense, perhaps in a material sense, and having to rebuild from practically nothing. Most have stared death in the face, whether by their own hand or someone else's.
