Tangentially, I always found the "see these two rocks? I'm gonna throw them in this pile of rocks and ask you to identify them" metaphor worked wonderfully - the visual info is there, but you're unlikely to identify them individually unless they really stand out or you make a special effort. Sadly the web site for the example seems down, but I suspect you linked it to me in the first place ^^
